How to choose a sunscreen you will actually wear
Daily sunscreen is the single most recommended step in skincare. The trick is finding one you enjoy enough to wear every day.
1. Look for broad spectrum and SPF 30+
"Broad spectrum" means the product protects against both UVA and UVB rays. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher for most people.
2. Mineral or chemical filters?
- Mineral (physical): zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Often preferred by sensitive skin, but some formulas can leave a white cast.
- Chemical (organic): filters such as avobenzone or octinoxate. Usually lighter and more invisible on the skin.
- Hybrid: many popular sunscreens, like EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46, combine both.
3. Match the texture to your skin
Oily and acne-prone skin usually prefers fluid, oil-free textures. Dry skin often enjoys creamier sunscreens that double as moisturizer. If you wear makeup, look for one that sits well underneath it.
4. Use enough, and reapply
Most people apply less sunscreen than the amount used in SPF testing. Cover your face, ears and neck generously, and reapply at least every two hours when outdoors, or after swimming or sweating.
Our pick for daily wear
For breakout-prone or sensitive skin, EltaMD UV Clear is a well-known favorite. If you prefer a moisturizer with SPF, La Roche-Posay offers a Toleriane Double Repair UV version.
