Skincare can feel overwhelming, but a solid routine only needs four steps. Start here, stay consistent for a few weeks, and only then consider adding more.
Morning routine
- Cleanse. Use a gentle cleanser, or just rinse with water if your skin is dry. A non-foaming option like the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a safe starting point.
- Treat (optional). If you have a specific concern, add one serum. The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% is a popular budget choice for oily skin and the look of pores.
- Moisturize. Choose a texture that suits you: a gel like Neutrogena Hydro Boost for oily skin, or a lotion like La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair for sensitive skin.
- Protect. Finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, every day. See our sunscreen guide.
Night routine
At night, skip the sunscreen. If you wore makeup or sunscreen, cleanse thoroughly (some people double cleanse with a balm or micellar water first), apply your treatment and finish with moisturizer. Dry skin may prefer a richer cream such as CeraVe Moisturizing Cream.
Tips that make a real difference
- Patch test new products on a small area for a few days before using them all over.
- Add one new product at a time so you can tell what works and what irritates.
- Be patient: most products need several weeks of consistent use before you can judge them.
- See a dermatologist for persistent acne, rosacea or any skin condition. Skincare products are not a substitute for medical advice.
